Anti-Gravity Yoga at The Third Space Soho

What they say:
In this case, they don't say!! With no description of this class on the timetable, I didn't know what to expect and was turning up blind....

What I say:
I'm glad I did! I could only describe it as mix of acrobats and yoga, which we performed on a special AntiGravity Hammock to give a low impact full body workout without the restraints of gravity (Having just saw Wicked The Musical last weekend, I'm feeling a song coming on here :P).

After being introduced to the hammocks with a few gentle swings, within minutes we were up in the air for our first upside down inversions - requiring a lot more ab strength than I had predicted!

Getting used to the hammock

But my favourite? Has to have been the infamous (or, in the yoga-world atleast) flying vampire! Wrapping ourselves in the hammocks, we folded over the material to create a little flap, which we then trapped our feet inside and flipped ourselves over. Twisting my arms in ways I didn't think was possible, I then lowered my body to the ground, where I hung in 'vampire pose' for a few swings back and forth.

Vampire

After some upper body work, pulling ourselves from the ground up into the air, we finished the class wrapping ourselves tightly in the hammock in a cocoon like shape, easing out our backs whilst quietening the body and mind. Apparently being enclosed in the hammock like this is meant to take your mind back to the quiteness of when you were inside the womb.... I don't quite know about that, but it was relaxing!

An upper body workout too!

Intensity: 8/10

Think of the hardest yoga or pilates workout you've had, then imagine doing it on a hammock suspended in the air! I did find it a 'nice' level intensity though - often I find yoga classes a bit boring and too 'zen', but this one I did feel like I'd actually had a workout.

Instructor: 8/10

Nadia, probably one of the most flexible and agile people I've ever met, was great, taking me through all the sequences and explaining the moves clearly. Very patient, even when I was twisting my hammock in all the wrong directions and getting myself in knots!

Amenities:  10/10

If you've read any of my previous posts on The Third Space, you'll know all about the fantastic amenities -  from the REN shampoo and conditioner in the showers, to Parlux hairdryers and GHD's in the changing rooms, their offer in more akin to the luxury boutique fitness classes I've reviewed - they go above and beyond what most gyms would offer!

Furthermore, they've recently opened a spanking new cafe area, featuring fresh and healthy breakfasts, lunches and snacks from Natural Fitness Food. Perfect for post-workout fuel at any time of the day - with protein  waffles for breakfast, fresh salads for lunch, and protein ball snacks, you can even have your only protein smoothie prepared just to your liking. A perfect addition to the club - I'm looking forward to trying some of these out soon!

Looks like a perfect post-workout pick me up!

Would I go back?

Absolutely!  The key to Anti-Gravity is confidence, the ability to trust the hammock and just let your body go. Of course this can be a bit nerve wracking to begin with, so it just takes a bit of practice and trial in the different poses, which can be easily built up over a few short classes. So a perfect excuse to go back again :-)
