Where to eat in London.... Wazen at Kings Cross!

London Kings Cross... great for the tube/train/Eurostar, however despite such high footfall of those coming into and out of London, it's not the best of areas if you want to find somewhere nice to eat. Well, not anymore - introducing the newly launched... Wazen!

Wazen Kings Cross

An authentic Japenese restaurant, Wazen opened up in Kings Cross just last month, and I was delighted to be invited along to their invite only launch party.

Launch Party

Upon arrival, our names were ticked off the guestlist as we entered, where we were greeted with a glass of premium Sake - a special Japanese rice wine, of which Wazen offers one of the widest ranges in London. In traditional Japanese style, they also offer ‘kikizake’, a tasting flight of three sakes, allowing customers to sample a blend of the unique and rare sake from all across Japan.

But the real highlight at Wazen (for me at least!) had to be the food, which was brought out on huge platter dishes throughout the night.  With dishes including Spicy tuna tartare, Chicken kakinotane and Baby Chicken with nanban sauce - the guests in attendance were quite literally pounding on the waiters as soon as they emerged with the next plate! Luckily there were a few bloggers amongst us, so we managed to wave the hands away for just enough time to capture a few pics....

It's no wonder the food was so popular - the menu at Wazen is overseen by Head Chef Toshimasa Tanahashi, who has over 30 years experience working in high end Japanese restaurants including Matsuri in St James, Kyubi at the Arts Club in Mayfair and Kouzu in Belgravia. If anyone could put together a good menu, it would be Toshimasa!

Managing to squeeze my way in to grab something from a few of the platters brought out, I got to try the three delicious dishes pictured above. But the highlight (and one I didn't have a chance to photo before it was snapped up!) had to have been the Scallop Ceviche - Diver caught Scottish scallop with tomato & chervil, dressed in yuzu dressing. Unami!

The Need To Know

Highlights: As above, Scallop Ceviche! With high quality fresh ingredients, combined with an authentic and extensive menu, Wazen really came up top on all the dishes. And no need to worry if, like me, your Japanese isn't quite up to scratch - the friendly and knowledgeable waiters were more than happy to explain the unusual dishes and flavorful combinations.

Low lights: Probably the fact that everybody was so quick to pounce on the platters coming out, that we really only did get to sample a small selection of what was on offer. Having said that, understandably this would be due to the fact we were at the launch party - hopefully I'll make it back for a  sit down meal where I wouldn't  have to fight over the food (well, atleast I'd hope not.... depending on who I'm dining with!).

Price: Great value for money, in particular their lunch menu - with dishes ranging from £8-£18, the special Bento box set lunch features assorted dishes changing on a daily basis, all served with steamed rice and miso soup. I only wish I worked close enough to make it down in my lunch break!

Best for: A delicious lunch or evening meal- special, but not at all pretentious! Wazen is open for lunches Mon - Fri 12:00-15:30, and Mon - Sat 18:00 - 23:00 for dinner and drinks. A must try.

Would I go back? Most definately! Having had a taste of what's on offer, I hope to return very soon for the full sit down experience. Hopefully you'll see an updated full review coming soon!
